Happy Diversity Day 2020!
Today is Diversity Day in the Netherlands! This is the day that we celebrate the power of diversity and inclusion at work. The organisation behind Diversity Day, Diversity at Work, has given out an Award today to two companies in the Netherlands that are most diverse. This year’s winners are ABN AMRO Bank and Kunstmuseum Den Haag. Diversity at Work outlined three criteria they used to choose the Award Winners. First, a company’s diversity approach must be innovating. Second, it must also be possible to apply their approach to other companies. Third, the approach must be effective, showing tangible diversity within the company. ABN AMRO developed the programme ‘Future Proof’, helping people advance in ABM AMRO’s employee’s subtop. 70% of participants actually got a promotion! Kunstmuseum Den Haag (The Hague Art Museum) has implemented the Rooney Rule, which means that for every job offer, there must be at least one applicant interviewed with a non-western migratory background. What about diversity? Diversity has many shapes and forms. Diversity at Work outlines the following: ethnic, religious, gender, LGBTQ, age, and individuals with disabilities or chronic illness. Fostering diversity within companies is very important, as this helps equalize chances on the job market. Besides, working in a diverse team of people often generates insights that you would not have had otherwise, giving you, the team, and the company a lead edge in creativity and innovation. On a personal level, diversity can also introduce you to people from different backgrounds. You can learn about their experiences, their ways of life, their views on certain topics, and how they approach problems. Learning how others look at and solve problems can improve your own problem-solving skills as well. A diverse work environment can broaden everyone’s worldview, and perhaps you will discover a new interest you never realised you had. But it’s not only about you learning from others. You can also teach others! You, and with you, everyone else, is part of a worldly system of diversity, if only you are aware of it. You give some, you take some, you teach some, you learn some. Happy Diversity Day 2020! Keep your eyes open and keep learning!
