International Day of Happiness: World Happiness Report 2019

Thematic news

The World Happiness Report is a landmark survey of the state of global happiness that ranks 156 countries by how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be. The report is produced by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network in partnership with the Ernesto Illy Foundation.

Netherlands 5th place

Each report includes updated evaluations and a range of commissioned chapters on special topics digging deeper into the science of well-being, and on happiness in specific countries and regions. Often there is a central theme. This year the focus is on happiness and community: how happiness has been changing over the past dozen years, and how information technology, governance and social norms influence communities.

Since last year, the Netherlands moved up a few spots, and is now in 5th place, just below Finland, Norway, Denmark and Iceland.

7th World Happiness Report

The first was released in April 2012 in support of a UN High level meeting on “Wellbeing and Happiness: Defining a New Economic Paradigm”. That report presented the available global data on national happiness and reviewed related evidence from the emerging science of happiness, showing that the quality of people’s lives can be coherently, reliably, and validly assessed by a variety of subjective well-being measures, collectively referred to then and in subsequent reports as “happiness.”

Happiness and Government

One of the subjects that is discussed in the report, is the effects of government actions on happiness. These are often difficult to separate from the influences of other things happening at the same time. Unravelling may sometimes be made easier by having measures of citizen satisfaction in various domains of life, with satisfaction with local and national governments treated as separate domains.
