It's too hard for adults to learn foreign languages.
I don't have the time or money to take language classes.
I don't need to learn Dutch because they already speak great English.
I'm afraid I'll make mistakes and be ridiculed.
These are some of the most common reasons adults avoid learning foreign languages. But for those of us who are or have been expats in foreign countries, we know well that learning the local language can have tangible benefits, whether those benefits are financial, academic, or social. While it's true that many Dutch people here in The Netherlands speak excellent English, learning a language can often connect you to your new country in important ways, and it can teach you a lot about the culture in which you're now living.
Many adult learners of foreign languages approach their study with the above misconceptions, which often holds them back. But as humans, our brains are particularly built for language learning, so all of us have the ability to master languages beyond our mother tongues. All it takes is a little knowledge of how we learn, how the local language works, and some goal-setting!
We know that foreign language learning is of particular importance to our local expat community. So for our next FREE webinar, Volunteer The Hague is proud to present, "Easy Dutch? This informative webinar will explain how adults can approach foreign language learning in a non-intimidating way that can make the process effective, time efficient, personally rewarding, and fun!
