The Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation is organizing an international conference in Amsterdam on 7 & 8 October 2019 to put the importance of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in crisis and emergency situations nationally and internationally on the agenda.

The conference will bring together experts in this field with those responsible for policy, planning and financing. And of course – most importantly - 'people with lived experiences': People who, despite everything they have experienced, have found the strength to rebuild their lives.

Mental Health and Psychosocial Support

Millions of people around the world live with the consequences of conflict, violence, terrorism, poverty, disasters and oppression. These experiences increase the risk of anxiety, depression and other conditions that stand in the way of daily functioning. In addition to causing immediate psychological distress, emergency situations also damage the social networks that people need to jointly cope with problems and commit themselves to reconstruction.

Despite the great need, mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) receive insufficient attention in humanitarian action. Mental well-being plays a crucial role in the reconstruction of affected areas, in the fight against poverty and in the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence. Psychosocial programs and trauma assistance strengthen the effectiveness of emergency aid programs.

The Netherlands is committed to better integration of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) in emergency aid. MHPSS is not a luxury, it is an essential part of humanitarian assistance.
