Rudolph Cleveringa, a law professor at Leiden University, who, in a public speech on 26 November 1940, protested against the dismissal of Jewish colleagues by the Nazi occupying powers. He was arrested shortly afterwards. His speech sparked a strike among students; the university was then closed by the Nazis and it remained closed throughout the war. Each year, the Leiden University Fund organizes the Cleveringa lectures at numerous places in the world.
